A retired farmer found a check from Enterprise, Ala., on a road at his farm just hours after powerful tornadoes hit the town, more than 100 miles away.
Jack Short, 77, can only surmise it was carried on the wind, hours before a tornado devastated Americus, Ga., not far from his farm.
But it's not exactly a windfall _ the check was for only $3.88 and was cashed in 1970. It is well preserved, with only slight smudging.
Short said he spotted the check the afternoon of March 1 while inspecting his property.
"The tornado warnings were out, and it was cloudy and raining," he said Friday. "I saw a piece of paper laying in the road that wasn't there before."
His discovery came as storms that killed several people were bombarding the South and Midwest. Short's farm is between Americus and Plains, the hometown of former President Jimmy Carter.
The personal check was dated July 27, 1970, and appears to be a payment to the Southeast Alabama Gas District.
