Strange Famous Firsts of the 1930’s.

The 1930’s was a time when many nations were struggling to find an answer to the Great Depression that began at the end of the 1920’s. The change in lifestyle from the roaring 20’s to a more conservative frame of mind was seen around the world. The stock market was still declining with the lowest point in 1933. After this time, the economy began to make a comeback. In Europe, the solution was seen in a different note with such things as Fascism, Nazism, and Stalinism becoming the dominating solution for the world crisis.

With all of this going on many famous first occurred that should be recognized which include:

1930
Ellen Church became the first airline hostess. She served as an airline hostess on flights between San Francisco, California and Cheyenne, Wyoming on United Airlines.

Sinclair Lewis became the first American recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature.

1931
Jane Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Jackie Mitchell became the first woman in organized baseball. She was signed by the Chattanooga Baseball Club at the age of nineteen.

1932
Hattie Caraway became the first woman elected to United States Senate.

Amelia Earhart became the first transatlantic solo flight by a woman.

1933
Frances Perkins became the first woman in United States Presidential Cabinet.

1934
Marie, Cecile, Yvonne, Emilie, and Annette Dionne became the first quintuplets to survive infancy. They were born near Callender, Ontario to Oliva and Elzire Dionne.

Horton Smith won the first Masters Golf Tournament in the Augusta National in Georgia.

Lettie Pate Whitehead became the first American woman to serve as a director of a major corporation, which was The Coca-Cola Company.

1936
Wallis Warfield Simpson became the first Time magazine "Woman of the Year."

1939
Jane Matilda Bolin became the first black woman judge in New York City.

Gene Cox became the first girl page in the United States House of Representatives.

Franklin D. Roosevelt became the first US president to speak on television.
