RALEIGH HOOK & LADDER FIRE TRUCK FLIPS - ROLLED OVER

uly 10, 2009
Three Firefighters Injured In Fire Truck Accident

Three City of Raleigh firefighters were injured this morning when the fire truck they were riding in overturned at the intersection of Dawson and West South streets in downtown Raleigh.

The firefighters were taken to Wake-Med with serious but not life-threatening injuries, said Assistant Fire Chief Rusty Styons. All three firefighters were expected to be released from the hospital this evening, Chief Styons said. He said the names of the firefighters will not being released at this time due to privacy reasons.

A fourth firefighter riding in the fire truck at the time of the accident was not injured. No other vehicles were involved in the accident and there were no other injuries.

The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. while the firefighters were responding to a house fire at 1020 Mark Street. The firefighters were riding in a tiller truck, also known as a hook-and-ladder truck. Tiller trucks require a driver in the front to steer the front wheels and a driver in the back to steer the back wheels. Both drivers of the tiller truck involved in today’s accident have “extensive experience” driving the vehicle, Chief Styons said. All four fighters who were on the tiller truck are assigned to Fire Station No. 1 at 220 S. Dawson St.

The $750,000 tiller truck was placed into service in 2004. Currently there is no estimate of damage done the vehicle. The City of Raleigh Police Department is investigating the accident.

The house fire on Mark Street turned out to be a minor incident, Chief Styons said. He said other emergency units from the City’s Fire Department were dispatched to the fire to replace the firefighters and tiller truck involved in the accident.
