BUBBLEBIKE SEEN AS POSSIBLE CONGESTION SOLUTION
Bubblebike could beat Congestion Charge London commuters determined to avoid paying the Congestion Charge have been offered a two-wheel alternative. The Bubblebike is a revolutionary scooter invented by British engineers. Its makers say it will be able to squeeze through the worst of the capital's snarled-up traffic and, as a two wheeler, is exempt from the charge - which is introduced from tomorrow. The scooter has been under development for the last three years and is based on Yamaha's ground-breaking XP500 TMAX model. Fitted with a roof to protect the rider from the elements, the Bubblebike is being promoted as the alternative to Ken Livingstone's £5 Congestion Charge. The open-sided bike, costing £1,295, is 79cms wide and is slim enough to fit through a doorway and follow the thinnest mopeds through the traffic. Phil Meaton, who led the design work at the manufaturer's Warwickshire headquarters and has produced five prototypes of the Bubblebike, said: "Not only does this avoid the Congestion Charge but it will also save you time on your journey because of its ability to manoeuvre in and out of the traffic." Other measures which anti-congestion charge campaigners are suggesting motorists use to avoid the charge include using foreign number plates, attaching more than one number plate to your vehicle or illegally obscuring your number.
